Rosetta Commons Foundation

Advancing Biomolecular Modeling

The Rosetta Commons Foundation (RCF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing technology related to biomolecular structural prediction, analysis and design (BioSPAD).

Our Mission

The mission of the Rosetta Commons Foundation is to promote, protect, and advance biomolecular modeling tools and to support and facilitate the growth of a diverse and international community of biomolecular structural modelers and designers.

Who We Are

We are a community of scientific researchers and leaders working in biomolecular structural prediction, analysis and design (BioSPAD) who believe in the power of science to transform the world for the better. We build tools to push the frontiers of knowledge and create leading-edge methods to explore the relationships between sequence, structure and function of biomolecules to bring forth an era in which biomolecular design is a mature, reliable technology. We have a shared vision of biomolecular design fueling all sectors of the bioeconomy, including advances in materials, nanotechnology, healthcare, and sustainability. We collaborate and support each other to achieve our shared goals: to accelerate translation from discovery to real-world impact and to empower our community to have a positive impact on people and the planet.

What We Do

Software

  • Produce and maintain the core Rosetta and PyRosetta packages and means to easily install and use them.
  • Produce and maintain other BioSPAD packages and datasets that are technically, functionally or scientifically Rosetta-related, including BioSPAD tools developed by Rosetta Commons researchers.
  • Collaborate with partners and interested parties to ensure that licensing and distribution of maintained tools has maximum impact.
  • Solicit and manage contributions to the Rosetta codebase, other managed BioSPAD codebases and related BioSPAD datasets.
  • Host, test, and promote Rosetta-related codebases and datasets.

Community

  • Raise funds to support RCF programs and services through private contributions, public grants and other revenue sources consistent with public charity regulations.
  • Publicize, promote the adoption of, and facilitate the ongoing development of biomolecular modeling-related technology and educational resources.
  • Organize and run high-quality, in-person events to bring the community together.
  • Encourage and facilitate biomolecular modeling-related research in the public interest.
  • Continually develop our community’s knowledge and skills by producing learning resources and training programs that lower the barriers to accessing and advancing BioSPAD.
  • Build a community culture where all are welcomed, valued, given a voice, supported, and empowered to contribute.

Legal and Administrative

  • Provide a legal home for the Rosetta Commons community — including managing financial accounts, forming employment and contracting relationships, protecting trademarks and copyrights, and providing structure for the Rosetta Commons board.
  • Help manage Rosetta Commons’ intellectual property rights to relieve the legal burden on creators and users.
  • Establish RCF licenses, ensuring the rights of licensees to obtain, use, modify, and, in some cases, redistribute intellectual property held by the RCF.
  • Engage with individuals and companies to accomplish the work set out by the community.

Our Values

Excellence

We are committed to excellence in science to solve challenging problems with rigor and integrity. We are committed to collecting relevant, high-quality empirical data to validate our predictions. We are committed to organizational excellence that leads to effective activity, efficient use of funds, timely decisions, and high-quality service for our community members.

Collaboration

Teamwork, communication, and trust drive our science and community. We seek input from relevant experts and work across institutions to tackle more significant problems than we could alone.

Community

We recognize that science is a human endeavor and that we have each chosen to contribute to the world in this way for myriad reasons. We take a genuine interest in one another’s well-being and contribute to an environment that encourages both personal and professional development of members across all career stages. We gather in person to share science and strengthen relationships with one another and find that this creates an experience that is nothing short of magic.

Respect

We consider how our actions and decisions impact our colleagues, community, and the world. We trust our colleagues to bring quality and integrity to their work. We respect the humanity and dignity of all people and generate an atmosphere of esteem, fairness, and recognition.

Sharing

We are working to advance biomolecular modeling for the benefit of science and society. Together. This requires us to share code and allow others to modify and expand it to suit their needs and to be encouraged to share their improvements with the broader community. Sharing also creates opportunities for new businesses (e.g. SaaS providers for enterprise use cases) whose existence and success advance our mission.
