European RosettaCon 2026 Travel Guide

ABOUT LISBON

Lisbon is set along the broad estuary of the Tagus, bearing the layered imprint of a city that once anchored a global maritime empire while repeatedly rebuilding itself after earthquakes and political upheavals. Its cultural life is shaped by centuries of Atlantic exchange: Manueline architecture, azulejo-covered façades, and the distinctive melancholy of fado coexist with a contemporary arts scene and diverse Lusophone influences. The city’s hills, riverfront vistas, and proximity to the Atlantic create a luminous landscape that frames both its historic quarters and its modern expansions.

AIRFARE

Each attendee is responsible for booking and paying for their own airfare. Please inquire with your PI and home institution about reimbursements. The nearest airport is Humberto Delgado (Lisbon) Airport (LIS). We recommend booking airfare as soon as possible to avoid price increases.

For attendees awarded a travel grant, our travel agent will book flights on your behalf. Please follow the instructions in the email you receive regarding your travel grant, as privately booked flights cannot be reimbursed.

Please remember to check for any visa requirements for country entry, including during layovers.

LODGING

Currently, there are two hotel options for discounted lodging. For conference attendees, the Imperador Hotel is offering a 15% discount on reservations via email (info@imperador.pt) with the code RosettaCon 2026.

For speakers and non-local organizers, lodging is provided at ALL Accor - Novotel Lisboa.

TRAVEL TO/FROM THE CONFERENCE VENUE

The conference will take place at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa - Rectory. There are several ways to travel between the airport and the university, with the journey taking around 15 - 40 mins. When possible, try to travel with others to help reduce costs, increase safety, and make for a far more fun experience. Here are some options to explore for getting from the airport to the Universidade Nova de Lisboa:

  • Metro: Take the Red line from the airport station to São Sebastião, then switch to the Blue line towards Amadora Este, exiting at Praça de Espanha. You will need a Navegante card, which costs €0.50 and can be topped up. Around 30 - 40 mins.
  • Taxi/Rideshare: Uber/Bolt options are available with pickup at the airport requested upon arrival through the app. Prices will vary. Around 20 mins, depending on traffic.
